How to Choose a Garage Door Company

Garage doors are meant both to keep the things in it, and your home, safe. But it’s also something functionally you need daily to get in and out of your home!

If something happens to your door, a broken spring or cable or it’s not working properly, it can seriously impact your day, and not in a good way!

When your garage door is in need of repair, choosing a garage door company that will do a good job, for a great price, can seem overwhelming. Why? Because it is! So many companies out there have poor reviews, bad customer service and take shortcuts doing the job right.

So how do you choose a good garage door company?

First, you want to do an online search (or call a friend!) for a few good options.

Make sure that the companies you call confirm they are professional, licensed, bonded, and insured.

Most garage door companies will come out and give you a quote. We recommend getting at least 2 quotes. That way you can see what the going price for that type of repair is and spot any big differences with the company.

Check reviews!

Make sure to read reviews on the companies you are interested in. Yelp and Facebook are both great options, as well as Google. Yelp is very strict about review monitoring, so you know you’ll get the mix of good and bad reviews, and know if there are any negative themes from the reviews.

There will always be a few customers who are upset about a very specific situation and write about it, but if you see that 90% of the reviews are 4+ stars with positive comments about quality, price and service, you should be good!

Does the company offer special services?

You want a company that is equipped and trained to handle all garage door related services: opener repair, opener installation, new garage door installation, spring replacement, sensor adjustment, remote programming, etc.

This means they KNOW garage doors and can handle any issue that comes up for your door.

Good Consultation Experience?

When the technician comes out to give a quote, judge them! Are they friendly? Helpful? Knowledgeable? Do they answer your questions? Did they give a quote in line with your stated budget?

Your garage door is an important part of your home, as well as your home’s security! Don’t settle for a garage door company that doesn’t meet these standards!

My Garage Door Won’t Open! What Do I Do?

We don’t think much about our garage doors until they stop working. And then you realize how much it can impact your daily life if your garage door isn’t working as it should.

Garage doors only have 1 job: to open and close when you tell it to. They provide not only temperature control to your car and home, but security as well.

What happens when your garage door stops working and won’t open? Below are 4 reasons why your garage door won’t open.

What to Do When Your Garage Door Won’t Open

Before calling a professional garage door company, there are a few things you can try first.

  1. Try replacing the battery on your remote.

It’s a pretty basic thing, but is often overlooked. Check the battery for the remotes you are using. Sometimes it’s an easy fix!

  1. Check if the garage door opener is plugged in!

True story: We got an emergency call that a garage door was wide open and wouldn’t close. It was late at night, a single mom with 2 small kids and she didn’t feel safe leaving her garage door open all night, since it was attached to her home. Not to mention, she had valuables in her garage – lawn mower, etc.

We came out and saw her garage door opener had been unplugged by her son. Boy did she feel silly. It was an easy fix for us, but she could have saved time and money troubleshooting this first.

  1. Try to open the garage door manually.

If you tried the first two fixes and they didn’t work, try lifting the door manually. If you can’t, it might be a problem with the torsion spring or cables.

If you suspect this is the case, call a professional garage door company IMMEDIATELY as trying to repair this if you don’t know what you’re doing is a safety hazard.

If you can lift the door manually, it could be that the disconnect switch is detached. This switch allows you to open or close the door manually during a power outage. Sometimes the switch gets unhooked. If the garage door opener runs but the door doesn’t move, this is often the problem.

  1. Does it smell like something is burning?

If you smell something burning from the garage door motor, it could be a spring or cable issue. The cables and springs are what actually open and close your garage door. If the motor is burning, it means those have failed and the opener is trying to do a job it isn’t supposed to do.

When Should I Call a Garage Door Company

If you’ve tried all the above suggestions and still can’t figure it out or get your garage door to work, call a professional!

Houston, Texas Garage Door Replacement Project

We got a call from our customer Ann that she ran into her garage door with her car. Whoops!

We were able to get over to her in less than an hour. Once we arrived, it was obvious her garage door was past the point of repair and needed to be replaced.

You can see in the images above the door had suffered an impact. There was no way to get this level and straight.

Ann lives in a community with an HOA, so it was important we found a door to match her existing one. Fortunately for Ann, after looking up the model number of her door, we found it was still being manufactured.

We purchased the exact same door and waited for it to arrive.

Since the delivery time was 2 days, we needed to secure the door somehow for safety. We instructed Ann not to touch the door at all. Touching it could cause it to fall, and harm her or someone else.

Once the door arrived, we rushed over to remove her old, damaged door. Then we started preparation to install her brand new garage door. We removed all the tracks, the damaged panels next and then all the hardware.

Next, we started assembling the new garage door. After only a few hours, the garage door was fully installed. Ann now had a beautiful new, un-damaged door to enjoy again! Our last step was lubricating the new garage door and installing her garage door opener.

Once we checked that everything was working properly, we were on our way!

How to Fix a Damaged Garage Door

damaged garage door houston, texas

Ideally your garage door will be in great working condition at ALL times. But in reality, this isn’t always the case.

It’s very easy for your garage door to get damaged. This post looks at some common sources of garage door damage.

We’ll also look at some ways you can prevent your garage door from being damaged.

Rats and Mice

They say there is probably 1 rat or mouse for every human on earth. Think about that for a second. Shudder! If this is true, that means there are over 7 billion rats and mice!

Even if that isn’t true, I’m sure we all know rats and mice are EVERYWHERE. Especially in and around our homes. Rats and mice enjoy your garage! Usually it’s an easy room to access from the outside, and it offers protection from the elements.

Rats and mice love chewing on things, including wooden garage doors and cables, both garage and electric!

The damage for your garage door is not just cosmetic, but weakening the door and creating holes. The rats and mice can then use these holes to get in and out of your garage more easily.

When it comes to eating through wires and cables, this can pose a fire hazard as well as problems with your garage door support if a cable is rendered useless.

What can you do about rats and mice in your garage?

Some tips for keeping rats and mice out of your garage:

  1. Don’t keep trash in your garage. Rats and mice like hiding in and under trash, and eating it!
  2. Get a cat! Cats love eating rats and mice (yuck!) but also can chase them away!
  3. Get traps and check them regularly. This can help reduce the rat population in your garage. You can do this yourself, or hire a pest control to spray regularly and set/change your traps.

Hitting Your Garage Door

Another form of garage door damage is the door getting hit, especially with big force.

This generally happens when a car crashes or runs into your garage door. It can also happen if you use your garage as a workshop or workout studio with heavy weights and tools. One small mishap can have a large object hitting your door and damaging it.

How to Prevent Damage to Your Garage Door

A few things can help reduce the chances of your garage door being hit:

  1. Make sure the garage and surrounding area is well lit. When you get can see better, less accidents happen.
  2. Don’t allow teenagers to drive the car in and out of the garage. Let them start on the street!
  3. Create a barrier or reinforcement while you work in your garage so there is less chance of the main door being hit by something.

Rodents and general human accidents are the biggest contributors to damaged garage doors. We hope this post helped you think about a few ways you can improve the chances your garage door stays safe and protected!

Having your garage door serviced at least annually can help catch any problems or damage before they turn into a bigger problem!

Wrong Size Garage Door Spring Replacement

It is very important to use the correct size garage door springs when replacing the springs on your garage door. You also need to make sure you are using the right type of spring.

If your springs are too small for your door, then the door will be heavier than it should be for the opener. It can fall or wear out your opener easily. The springs will most likely break or snap more quickly too.

broken springs

The way to figure out the correct sized spring for your door, is to figure out the weight of the door. This is done with a common measuring tool garage door techs carry on their trucks.

There are 2 options once the weight of the door is determined.

  1. Install a single spring system. This is recommended for one car garage doors only or very light 2 car garage doors.
  2. Install a double spring system. This is the preferred installation for 2 car garage doors and all heavy garage doors.

If you want a 1 spring system on a 2 car garage door, it can work. But we don’t recommend for the following reasons:

  • Shorter Life Span: single springs don’t last as long as double springs. It’s a higher upfront cost, but lower over the life of the spring or springs.
  • Safety: Single spring systems carry a bigger risk of springs snapping while the door is in motion. If this happens, the door can fall quickly down and damage property or worse, a person.
  • Opener Wear and Tear: The door will be heavier, which will wear down the opener more quickly. More money to replace it sooner!

Conversely, there are some big advantages to installing a 2 spring system on your 2 car garage door.

  • They last longer! They can last up to twice as long as some single spring systems.
  • If a spring does break or snap while the door is moving, the 2nd spring acts as a backup to support the door so it doesn’t fall. It is VERY rare that both springs would snap at the same time.
  • 2 springs make your door much lighter, so the opener has a much easier time opening and closing it. This will allow your to get more years out of your opener.

You can see in the picture above the broken springs and the new ones we installed. You’ll notice they are MUCH bigger than the older springs. These old springs are ONLY 4 years old, and they already snapped! This is what happens when you put in the wrong size.

Correctly sizing your garage door springs will ensure accidents don’t happen.

If you’re in the Houston area, give Perfect Solutions a call so we can fit the proper size springs for your door and ensure your safety!

What to Look For When Purchasing a New Garage Door

Your garage door is not your average “door” at your home. It is a big part of the style and curb appeal of your exterior. This means choosing the right one is important and has a big impact.

Your garage door is also the main entry point to your home, so ensuring that you have a door that is secure and provides safety for your home, yourself, and its contents, is important.

If you are one of the many homeowners who use their garage door to work, work out, or as an extra living space, you know that choosing a garage door that is well insulated is key to using your garage door comfortably.

Purchasing a new garage door means choosing function AND style together with your budget to find the right one.

Garage Door Materials

You want to first consider the composition and durability of a garage door when you are purchasing a new one.

Garage doors are made from wood, steel, aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass and more.

The design of your home will influence what garage door material you choose. Also depending on your budget and the level of durability you need.

Other things to consider:

Consider the insulation value of a garage door you choose based on the climate and what you use the garage door for. Insulation R values are either polystyrene material or polyurethane. Ask your tech what you need based on your how you use your garage.

Finding an Installation Company

Ensure you do your research when hiring a garage door company to install a new door for you. Read Yelp and other 3 party review sites to get the whole picture. Ask around, and ensure the company will: offer a free inspection and quote and if they guarantee their work.

The company should be knowledgeable enough to help you find the right door that suits your style, your needs, and your budget!

4 Reasons Your Garage Door Isn’t Closing Properly

It is very frustrating when your garage door isn’t working as it should. Imagine waking up one morning, or coming home from work, and your garage door won’t open or close.

This kind of garage door problem is a headache. Late for work, garage door companies are closed at night, etc. Such a hassle.

Some people might try to fix it themselves before calling a professional. This can be dangerous, or at the very least, can make the problem worse. Unless you know what you’re doing, you probably won’t be able to fix it.

Calling a professional garage door company is the best course of action if your garage door isn’t opening or closing properly.

Why Won’t My Garage Door Open?

There are a few reasons why your garage door isn’t opening or closing properly. Below are a few possible causes:

1. Photo-Eye Obstructed

Most garage doors have a photo eye that detects an object underneath your garage door that prevents it from closing all the way. The photo-eye is a safety feature that prevents a child or valuable object from being crushed by the heavy garage door. It works by shooting a laser light from one end of the garage to the other. If something gets in the way of the laser, it will automatically open back up if it’s closing.

The photo-eye is located about 4 inches above the ground. It needs to be aligned with the other photo-eye on the opposite side of the door. Sometimes readjusting this is all it takes to get your garage door working properly. If the photo eye is actually broken, you’ll need a tech to fix it for you.

2. Your opener is unplugged.

This has actually happened to a customer of ours, who called us out because her garage door wasn’t working and all we had to do was plug it in! She felt a little silly but it happens to the best of us.

If your garage door won’t open or close, before you call a tech check that the door is connected to its power source. A good indication that your power is disconnected is if you don’t hear a sound when you attempt to open the door.

If you discover the power isn’t connected, just plug it in! Should work like new!

3. Malfunctioning Remote Control

If your power is connected, next look at your remote. You can try replacing the battery on the remote to see if that helps. If it doesn’t, time to call a tech!

4. Broken Springs

Your torsion springs could be to blame for your door not opening or closing properly. Springs work to make your garage door easier to lift open and shut. If the springs weren’t there, the door would be too heavy to open with the garage door opener.

If the spring breaks, the garage door won’t open.

If you see a broken spring or suspect this is the case, don’t try and fix it! This can be dangerous. If the spring is not fully broken, it can snap at any point and fall down on you or anything in the way. Be safe and call a tech.

If you try any of the above “fixes” and they don’t work, or you discover that a spring is broken or your photo-eye is out of alignment, the best bet is to call a professional, licensed tech who can properly assess and fix your door.

4 Non-Residential Ways to Use a Garage Door

It has become popular to use garage doors recently outside of a traditional residential application.

Many restaurants and businesses are using gargae doors as part of the overall design and structure. One reason is because garage doors are inexpensive as compared to other building materials. They are also easy to use and install. Plus, garage doors provide the industrial vibe many places are going for.

Below are 4 ways to use garage doors for non-residential and commercial use.

Many businesses can now enjoy the same benefits homeowners enjoy with their garage doors, like insulation, easy maintenance, security, and style.

Insulation

Insulation helps to regulate temperature in a space, and can lower cooling and heating bills.

Offices enjoy the benefits of an insulated door at a lower price!

Easy Maintenance

Garage doors are easy to maintain. Plus, there are special companies that deal specifically with garage doors, so it’s easy to find a tech who can help with any issues.

Garage doors don’t need to be painted regularly, which is a must in office spaces. Plus all the parts on a door, unless subjected to extreme weather conditions, are not prone to rust or denting.

Garage doors are also a fun way to divide up a space or a room. Garage doors can provide privacy for a conference room or for parties. Garage doors are built to have soundproofing as well, so it doesn’t require padding and other expensive soundproofing features.

Security

Normal doors or those big stainless steel pull down doors, don’t provide as much security as a garage door can.

Garage doors are built with strong nuts and bolts, so breaking in is harder on regular doors. Garage doors are also made with much stronger materials than a regular door, and even a stainless steel gate. Garage door materials are typically steel, aluminum, PVC and fiberglass.

Additionally, new garage door models have many security features built in, including CCTV cameras and locking mechanisms to control with your smartphone. This is great for businesses to watch over their property if they are away.

Garage doors can also be installed with alarm systems, which work like it would in your home. If a break-in is detected, the police will be notified.

Modern Design

While design doesn’t impact security or function, it’s an important consideration for a lot of people. Industrial spaces or any office or business looking for a fun and quirky modern feel can enjoy a garage door for both style and function!

Garage Doors Are Not Just For Your Garage

Garage doors can serve many purposes, not just to hide your car from the street! They provide security, are cost-effective, low maintenance and are stylish.

Any garage door company is qualified to install garage doors. Ask them about commercial applications!

Installing a Garage Door Opener Safely

If you are going to forego hiring a professional to install your new garage door opener, this post will help to guide you in safely installing a garage door opener.

It can be dangerous to do this, so make sure you take safety precautions when installing a brand new garage door opener. These safety tips not only prevent injury to you, but damage to your garage and garage door opener.

Step 1: Read the manual!

Seems silly, but it matters! Settings and installation are specific to the model you are installing, so you need to read it and be aware of any special notes.

Step 2: Test your door.

Make sure to test your garage door before you install the opener. Ensure it is opening and closing properly and is lubricated well.

You should not install a new opener if your garage door won’t open or close easily using a manual method.

Step 3: Remove Cords and Dress Properly!

Inspect your garage before installing the opener. Check for any ropes or cords near your garage door. These can get in the way of your garage door opening and closing, and cause damage.

Also, consider what you are wearing and that no loose threads or parts of your clothes can get caught in the door while you are working on it.

Step 4: Leave Your Tracks Alone!

We don’t recommend DIY-ing track replacement, cable replacement, pulley replacement or spring replacement. These jobs are best left to a professional.

You shouldn’t need to adjust this if it’s the same door, when you are installing a new opener. If something isn’t going right, it might be an issue with one of these components and it’s best you call a professional garage door company.

Step 5: Ready to install!!

The first thing you need to do is disconnect the power to the garage door at the main breaker. Whether or not your opener requires electrical wiring, we still recommend shutting off the power to play it safe.

Ensure the power cord for the garage door opener is plugged into a properly grounded outlet.

Step 6: Test!

Once you install the opener, per the manual instructions, test all the security features and general features of the opener.

The most important test is the auto reverse. Place an object in the path of the garage doors and attempt to close them. If the door senses the object and automatically reverses, opening again, it’s all good!

Another safety feature to check include the emergency release.

Installing an opener can go smoothly, or terribly wrong. Make sure to read the manual and if you feel you can do it, go for it! If anything sounds confusing, call a professional to give you a hand! Better safe than sorry!

If you’re in the Houston area, give us a call!

Finding a Legitimate Garage Door Company

Ensuring you hire a reputable and legitimate garage door company is the first, and the most important, step before any garage door work or repair happens.

Sadly, there are many people who aren’t qualified to repair and help you maintain your garage doors. They do a half effort job, for a lot of money, which ends up causing you trouble and more money down the road.

How to Choose a Legitimate Garage Door Company

The first thing you can do is google garage door repair in your area and look at 3rd party sites for review. Yelp and Facebook are popular choices for people, and you will probably find the greatest number of reviews here.

Read the reviews, including looking at the overall rating. You should eliminate options with several bad reviews of course, and read the actual reviews to see if you can find any themes, both positive and negative. This will help narrow your options.

You can also check BBB to see if any problems exist that are attached to a company you want to choose.

Next, ask for proof that the company is licensed, bonded and insured. Any legitimate garage door company will be happy to provide these details. They have nothing to hide, and most companies appreciate the thoroughness of a consumer to verify their company.

Next, once you make an appointment, ask the company to confirm the name of the tech that will be sent out. Then, once the tech arrives, check their ID and confirm they are who they say they are. This is helpful for security and to prevent any fraud.

Why do I need to do all of this?

Taking some extra steps, in the beginning, to do your research and ensure your safety, will increase your chances that the company performing work on your garage is good at what they do.

Many poor or illegitimate garage door companies cause more damage than they repair, and it will cost you time and money down the line. Preparing yourself in advance will help avoid this headache.

If you are in the greater Houston area, feel free to give us a call! We will happily provide our license and insurance information, and guarantee our work for 5 years! We provide top notch service, and have the reviews to prove it!
