Choosing the Right Garage Door Opener

New automatic garage door openers come with a ton of great features these days. If it’s been some time since you last replaced your opener, you might want to check out what is on the market. You might be surprised with what you can get, and at what cost!

In addition to all the great upgrades, there are also a ton of openers on the market now compared to 10 years ago. So finding and choosing the right garage door opener has never been easier.

Garage Door Opener Safety Features

Garage door openers on the market today have a long list of great safety features. They all have an auto reverse feature, which detects if there is an object in the path of the door. If it detects something, it will automatically reverse. This helps protect children and pets from becoming trapped under the heavy garage doors.

Another great improvement is the rolling code tech. This changes the access code every time the garage door remote is used. This makes it very hard for thieves to break your code. There are event some garage door remotes not that use fingerprint tech for extra security.

Garage Door Mechanism Types

When you are researching garage door openers, you’ll notice there are 3 kids: chain drive, belt drive and screw drive.

Belt drive openers are generally the most expensive. They require no maintenance.

Chain drive openers are the cheapest and the most common. They are louder though, and require regular maintenance.

Screw drive openers are in the middle price wise, and much quieter than chain drives.

Motor Horsepower

You’ll also notice in your research that there are 3 levels of motor horsepower: 1/4, 1/2 and 1. The horsepower you choose depends on your garage door. Lighter doors only need 1/4HP. A heavy door that is steel or wood, or a double garage door, needs 1/2HP or 1HP. This is to help lift the extra weight of the door.

Perfect Solutions or any professional garage door company can help you figure out what horsepower you need for your door.

Garage door openers are available in three levels of horsepower; ¼ HP, ½ HP, and 1 HP. A light weight, single garage door only needs a ¼ HP motor, but a heavier steel or wood set of double doors will need a ½ HP or 1 HP motor to lift the additional weight. Perfect Solutions Garage Doors can help determine the right horsepower for your garage door.

Choosing the Right Automatic Garage Door Opener

If your garage door opener was made before 2016, there have been a ton of recent upgrades and abilities compared to the one you have, especially if yours is several years old!

If you are looking at a new garage door opener, there is a lot to consider and a ton of features you can get! Garage door technology gets more reliable every year, and the various safety and security features go a long way in the security of your home. There is also a lot more options when it comes to the horsepower and mechanism of openers that can best suit your needs.

Choosing the Right Horsepower For Your Garage Door

You have a few horsepower choices for an automatic garage door opener: 1/3 HP, 1/2 HP, or 1 HP electric motors.

1/3 HP motors are best for lighter garage doors. Heavier garage doors like wood or steel, or a set of double garage doors needs at least 1/2HP so it can lift the extra weight.

It always makes sense to choose an opener with more horsepower than you need, especially if the price difference isn’t large. Generally the difference between a 1/3 HP and 1HP isn’t big, so it’s worth it for the extra power.

Choosing the Right Mechanism

There are 3 types of garage door mechanisms: belt drive, screw drive and chain drive.

A belt drive is the most expensive mechanism, but requires no maintenance.

A screw drive is a mid-range option, and is quieter than a chain drive opener.

A chain drive is the most affordable type and also the most commonly used. The only drawback is it can be loud and requires regular maintenance.

Choosing the Right Garage Door Opener Security Features

There are tons of great security features in new garage door openers, including:

  • Motion detectors that turn on lights when motion is detected.
  • As of 1993, the Consumer Product Safety Commission made this feature mandatory for automatic garage door openers to include an auto-reverse feature. If the door detects something in it’s path, it will open back up instead of continuing to close.
  • Rolling code technology: this changes the code every time on a remote which makes it very hard for thieves to crack it and open your door when you aren’t home.
  • There are even new features out now that use finger print recognition software for openers!

Replacing Wooden Garage Door Project

Our latest project involved totally tearing down this existing garage door and installing a brand new one + an opener.

The owner wanted to actually use his garage door to park his car. A garage door that opens with the a push of the button was, of course, pretty necessary to achieve his goal.

The project was a big one because the existing doors were wood, and rotten in many places. We had to completely remove the door and the rotted areas before re-framing the opening.

The homeowner also wanted to access the garage with a regular walk through door, so we took that into consideration when we framed out the opening, and chose a door size.

With the doors framed out and the walk through door installed, the next step was installing the new door and then installing a new opener to make it work!

The also added insulation to this door to keep the garage regulated and comfortable.

The opener we went with was a LiftMaster 8550W. We install this opener quite often as it’s a solid choice. Affordable, great security features and WiFi abilities, so you can open and control your doors with a smartphone or tablet.

The project was a huge success. It not only looks way better with brand new doors and a coat of fresh paint but those rotted wood doors and other problems with the garage structure itself were resolved.

Now the homeowner can happily enjoy this new garage, park his car out of the elements, and control it all from his phone!

Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Garage Door Opener

Garage door openers are rather simple machines and most generally last for many years. As with the case with any machine, they do eventually malfunction or quit working all together. It is then time to look for a new one which has added tech features. It is important to distinguish between the need for a replacement and a need for repair or reprograming.

Safety First

It has been mandated since 1993 that all garage door openers be equipped with a safety feature known as a reversal mechanism. This feature uses a set of sensors to detect objects in the path of the door. When one is detected, the door automatically reverses directions. If a garage door opener does not possess this feature or it has malfunctioned, it is essential to have the opener replaced with one that features auto reverse.

Noise Pollution

As garage door openers age they may begin to make louder noises during operation. As technology advances quieter garage door openers are being introduced to the market all of the time. If yours is alerting your neighborhood when you are leaving for work or waking loved ones upon your return it may be time to retire the old one. The newest chain drive models are quitter than their parent versions. The jackshaft and belt drive versions are said to be the quietest on the market.

Tech Options for Annoyances

A weak garage door opener or one in which the sensors are going bad forces owner to manually hold the button to operate it. This is an extreme annoyance and hassle for the whole family. Simply replacing your old opener will relieve you of this annoyance and provide your family with additional security.

As mentioned, garage door openers with new technological features are being introduced to the market every day. One example is known as the rolling code. This offers both your loved ones and valuables additional security from the criminal element. It generates a new code each time the opener is used to prevent criminals from hacking into your home.

Today’s advanced garage door openers feature apps for your convenience. Liftmaster, for example, offers an app for both computers and smart phone which is compatible with one of their garage door opener models. This app allows for remote control such as closing, opening, and monitoring from any location which offers an internet connection. Many home owners opt to upgrade to the Liftmaster model and app for convenience and security reasons.

Keypad Access

Today’s garage door openers offer outdoor keypad for access. This is extremely handy for children as well as repairmen. Individuals may gain access to the garage through a program code which is stored in the keypad when you are away from home.

Blackout Backup

Another convenient feature garage door openers offer is a battery backup. The backup battery automatically powers your opener during a power outage. The battery backup generally provides up to ten cycles of operation. Once power is returned will recharge itself to prepare for the next blackout.

Six Reasons to Invest in a New Automatic Garage Door

New Garage Door Opener Not a Big Investment

If you currently have a manual garage door or if your garage door opener is causing more trouble than it’s worth, it’s probably time to invest in a new automatic garage door opener. Automatic garage door openers are now more reliable and affordable than ever.

Here are six reasons to invest in a new automatic garage door:

1)      New Safety Features

Every garage door opener made since 1993 has an auto-reverse safety feature that ensures nothing or no one can get pinned underneath the massive door. They also come with an emergency manual release pull-chain in case there is ever an issue with the opener. If your garage door does not have these features, please contact Perfect Solutions Garage Door for a free estimate.

2)      New Security Features

Today’s garage door openers come with many beneficial security features like fingerprint recognition access and rolling code technology. Thieves can crack the code on older garage door openers and then break into the home using the interior garage door. New automatic garage door technology makes it practically impossible for someone to gain access to your home using your garage door opener.

3)      Safer Storage

If you have a high-quality garage door opener, you will feel more comfortable storing your valuables in the garage. Garages are the perfect place to store sports equipment, bicycles, gardening tools, and lawnmowers.

4)      Increased Home Value

If you are considering selling your home, a new automatic garage door opener will increase the resale value of your home. Potential home buyers will appreciate the convenience and security it provides. You can also update the garage door at the same time. Garage doors are now available in a variety of stylish materials, designs, and colors. Please feel free to visit any of our Perfect Solution Garage Door locations to view the wide selection of doors that we can custom order for you.

5)      Safer Home Entry

An automatic garage door provides a convenient and safe entrance way into your home. You can click your keychain remote, pull the car into the garage, and immediately shut the door behind you. This will ensure that no one has the chance to sneak in.

6)      Affordable Home Upgrade

The best part about treating yourself to a new automatic garage door is that it’s not a huge investment. You can find a reliable, state-of-the-art garage door opener for a few hundred dollars. Some models are priced as low as $150. When you consider the cost of most home repairs, an automatic garage door is one of the least expensive upgrades you can do.

A new automatic garage door opener is not a large investment, but it is definitely a worthwhile one. Please contact Perfect Solutions Garage Door if you are interested in a free quote for a new automatic garage door.
