Should You Install Your Own Garage Door?

A new garage door is a great investment for your home, both your home security and your home’s value. It can end up costing you a pretty penny if you don’t have it installed correctly. Perfect Solutions has been called many times because low budget garage installers left a big mess for the homeowner to clean up.

Save the headache by choosing a professional garage door company, with excellent reviews on a 3rd party review site, the first time. Low installation prices sound good, but generally they are too good to be true.

Below are 5 reasons you should never install your garage door yourself, or hire a cheap company to do it.

1.    Safety

Many valuable objects, and more important, pets, children and other adults, have been hurt severely by a garage door that crashes down unexpectedly. Hiring a professional installer, or avoiding installing a new garage door yourself, can help prevent injury and damage so that never happens.

2.     Expensive Repairs

Many inexperienced installers can damage the garage door tracks and pulleys during an installation that can prevent the garage door from opening and closing properly, or at all. An experienced professional will install your door and prevent expensive and unnecessary repairs down the road.

3.    Bad Warranties

Many low budget garage door installers go out of business because of the poor quality of their work. So if you happen to be one of their last customers, the warranty they offered isn’t valid once they are out of business, and you’re left with a garage door that isn’t installed correctly. Don’t let this happen to you. Investigate an installer before you hire them, and read reviews!

4.    Find an Installer with Experience!

If you think you can handle installing a garage door on your own, think again! Unless you have extensive experience working with garage doors, and are a licensed garage door tech, you probably should avoid installing your own garage door.

Safety issues can crop up easily when the job isn’t done right. It’s one thing to fix an isolated garage door repair issue, and another to install and set up an entire automatic garage door!

5.     A little more expense on installation, goes a long way!

Spending a little more money and using a reputable garage door installation company, will save you money in the long run. You’ll get better quality work and a warranty or guarantee on work and repairs performed.

The reasons listed above are just a few of the important reasons why you should never skimp when it comes to hiring a professional and qualified garage door installer!

Why Garage Door Safety Is Important

Most people assume that if their garage door is opening and shutting, then it’s safe to use. And while that is mostly true, it’s also true you need to ensure your garage doors are safe at all times. A garage door is a big steel or wood door, that is suspended several feet in the air. It’s held in place by screws, thin metal

A garage door is a big steel or wood door, that is suspended several feet in the air. It’s held in place by screws, thin metal tracks and a spring loaded tension setup. Ensuring these parts are working as they should takes constant care and vigilance.

While there have been many improvements to garage door safety in the last 20 years, many doors are older than this. They don’t meet essential safety standards that keep you, your car, your belongings and family safe.

Below we’ll look at ways to keep your garage door safe and how to ensure garage door safety in your home.

Child Safety and Your Garage Door

Kids love playing in and around your garage. The remote makes this big door go up and down, how fun! But using the remote over and over again can be dangerous. Keep remotes away from children, and mount a keypad for adult use only.

Auto-Reverse Garage Door Safety System

All garage doors installed after 1993 have a safety sensor, as per the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s mandatory order.  The door has a sensor so that if something is in the path of the garage door, the door will automatically reverse. This helps prevents accidents and bodily injury.

It is key for the safety of your belongings and other people, to ensure your door is updated with this feature, especially if you aren’t sure whether your door was installed before or after 1993.

Test Your Garage Door’s Basic Safety Feature

Regular maintenance of your garage door includes checking safety features. The first thing you can do during this type of check is to pull the emergency release cord. Most garage door models have this cord hanging from the motor of your garage door opener. This will allow you to open the door manually.

Once you pull the cord, you can then test the balance of the door. This is done by how easily (or not) you can open the garage door manually. You can also test the force setting of the door. You do this by evaluating in manual mode whether the door reverses with resistance.

Your opener should have a manual, which should also give maintenance instructions that you can follow. If you can’t find the manual, or you prefer a professional to perform the safety checks, call a professional garage door company. If you’re in the Houston area, call Perfect Solutions! 281-557-6351

Why You Should Hire a Professional Garage Door Installer

Not many people realize that a garage door is a big investment for your home, especially if you are looking to sell soon. It is also an expensive part of your home to replace, so if you are getting repair work or a new garage door installed, you want to make sure you have an experienced company handling the job.

Save the stress, and hire a garage door company who employ technicians who are highly trained and experienced. It can be tempting to hire a local handyman to perform repairs, and sometimes this works out fine. But a company that guarantees and/or warranties their work will give you peace of mind.

We have made a lot of money fixing the poor repair and installation jobs of other inexperienced techs. While this might be nice for our bank account, it is a waste of money for you! And a waste of our time, when we could have done the job for you right the first time!

We wanted to put together the top 5 reasons you should hire a professional garage door installer, even though the reasons as stated above are pretty obvious!

1.     It can cost more in the long run to hire someone inexperienced!

An installer or handyman that isn’t licensed, bonded, and has little experience can cause expensive damage to your garage door and other garage door parts, like your tracks, pulley system and more.

2.     Risk of Hiring Thieves!

This might sound paranoid, but it’s happened! Hiring someone you don’t know, or a company that isn’t licensed for garage door work could be thieves in disguise! They can take your deposit and run, or use the repair job as an opportunity to break into your home, or scope it out.

3.     Safety Issues

We have repaired many doors that are the remains of a bad garage door accident due to a bad installation. An inexperienced installer can do a poor installation job that results in your door falling unexpectedly or causing damage to your car, or family.

4.     Out of Business!

We work on some projects that were done by a company no longer in business. Hiring a reputable company generally ensures a long lasting business and no hassles.

5.     Warranties

You can count on a quality garage door company to choose the right materials, ensure proper installation and most importantly, will stand by their work. Hiring a company that doesn’t guarantee their work, and offer a warranty on their job complete is a red flag!

These are just a few reasons why you should hire a professional garage door installer. If you are in the Houston, Texas area, consider calling Perfect Solutions Garage Door. You can reach us at 281-557-6351 for your garage door needs!

3 Benefits to Sealing Your Garage Door

We often recommend a garage door sealing when we are servicing a garage door. Most people say no, because they feel it’s an unnecessary expense. And while it does cost money, there are 3 big benefits to doing it that you might want to consider before you decline.

Why Should I Seal My Garage Door?

The main job of a garage door seal is to fix the gaps under your garage door. There are 4 main advantages of sealing. They include keeping insects out, energy efficient benefits, and home security.

Below we’ve gone into more detail about each advantage.

  1. Garage door sealing prevents insects from entering your garage!

Insects are a pain. If you have electronics in your garage, they can do a number on those as well. They love to start colonies in electronics! A good garage door seal prevents this from happening.

Insects can easily crawl through gaps in your garage door and bring more with them! An airtight seal goes a long way to stopping these insects from a way in.

Depending on where you live, poisonous insects like spiders or scorpions can also come through gaps in your door. Even more reason to seal your garage doors!

  1. Sealing your garage door is energy efficient!

Controlling the temperature in your attached garage door directly affects the temperature in your home. Sealing any gaps in your home’s windows and doors helps to save on energy. And so does sealing your garage door.

The cooler your garage is in the summer, and warmer in the winter, will help to keep your home’s temperature regulated as well.

In the hot climate in Texas, the money spent on sealing your garage doors will soon equal the savings on your energy bill!

  1. Sealing your garage door keeps your home secure.

Burglars love when they find a garage door with a broken seal. If there is a gap big enough for a crowbar to fit under, even better!

Many burglaries actually happen because of the gaps in your garage door. Sealing your garage door can keep your car and other items in your garage safe, and prevents an access point to the rest of your home.

Benefits Outweigh the Cost of Garage Door Sealing

We have found that the benefits of sealing your garage door outweigh the cost of having the sealing done. Whether it’s home security or energy savings, the ROI is there.

Ask your garage door tech next time you see him to seal your doors!

Commercial Roll-Up Garage Door

A Safe Work Environment

One of the most dangerous elements of the work place are commercial roll-up garage doors. These types of doors are extremely heavy and under an immense amount pressure. Improper care and maintenance of a roll-up door can cause great bodily injury as well as death. Those industries that must use commercial roll-up garage doors are responsible for not only ensuring that their doors are up to inspection, but that all employees have been thoroughly trained in operating them.

Not that long ago the United States Department of Energy and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration released clear warnings about essential precautions of operating these types of doors in the work place. One of the first steps to ensuring that the work environment is as safe as possible is to have commercial roll-up garage doors professionally installed and maintained. Vigilance in this area should never be lax as it can introduce a clear and present danger.

Precaution Points

All staff members should be instructed in the safe operation of commercial roll-up garage doors. Once understood employees should also be required to sign a list of instructions and safety tips to ensure that they are familiar with these procedures. Below is a list of points to be noted:

  • Again, the importance of professional installation and maintenance cannot be stressed enough.
  • Ensure that roll-up garage doors are equipped with up-to-date functioning auto reverse infrared sensors.
  • Commercial roll-up garage doors require diligently scheduled routine maintenance.
  • During maintenance all roll-up doors should be both visually and physically inspected for signs of wear and tear which might cause malfunctions.
  • Remove all obstructions from the vicinity of the door, especially prior to operating it.
  • Never stand close to a roll-up garage door, particularly while it is in operation.
  • Note the position, open or closed, of all commercial roll-up doors at all times.
  • Never allow untrained individuals to perform repairs on roll-up doors. Hire only highly trained specialists for these tasks.
  • Ensure that all unauthorized individuals, especially children, keep a safe distance between them and the garage door.

Danger Signs

While it is vital to employ a professional for installation, repair and maintenance of commercial roll-up garage doors, staff members should also be trained in visual inspection precautions. It is important to carefully examine all roll-up doors on a routine basis to check for warning signs. These signs should be noted, if found, and related to a professional garage door specialist immediately.

One significant malfunction indicator is that the door begins to open and close too rapidly or sluggishly. This is generally due to its aging process. It may require lubrication or small adjustments. It may also mean that certain parts, if not the entire roll-up door, requires a replacement. Others signs to watch for include damage to any components, fraying cables, and loose hardware. This can prevent serious injuries and casualties.

All of these precautions should not be a deterrent from using commercial roll-up garage doors. They are one of the most important, as well as convenient, tools in the work place to drive productivity forward. The experienced team members at Perfect Solutions Garage Door are on standby waiting for inspection and maintenance appointments to be scheduled. Allow our garage door specialist to assist in maintaining a safe work place environment.

Garage Door: Safety Cable Repair

Safety cables may be the single most protective feature of your garage door. They prevent broken springs from injuring loved ones and/or damaging valuable property. Though they are lighter, they resemble garage door cables. Safety cables attach to the wall in closest proximity to the stationary pulleys. Sometimes they are attached to the garage door track. The cables are then laced through springs, and attach to the support as the garage door spring.

Garage door safety cables are relatively simple to install. They can generally be purchased as a kit which contains all of the necessary hardware. In most instances, it only requires about an hour for installation. Inspect your garage door track in order to create a comprehensive list of required parts. This includes fasteners, s-hooks, and eyebolts etc. This way should the kit not contain everything you will need, you will have it on hand.

Kits, garage door components, required tools, and necessary safety wear may be purchased online or in a home improvement store. These items may also be available at a local garage door company as well. The garage door owner’s manual most likely contains an order form; however, this will probably be the most expensive route.

Reasons for Garage Door Safety Cables

Garage door springs are responsible for an immense amount of pressure. Should the spring snap without safety cables in place the result could be extensive damage to valuable property, severe bodily injury, or even death. The amount of pressure which would drive the spring across the garage creates enough force to penetrate a wallboard which is double layer and 5/8 inches thick. This amount of force can completely destroy a windshield which can cost $400 or more to replace.

As mentioned replacement and/or installation is quite simple. It requires lacing the cable through the garage door spring and being able to remain steady while on a ladder. Upon the installation of one side all moving components should inspected prior to installing the cable on the opposite side. Ensure that the garage door system in functioning properly. It is also important to make sure that the safety cable is not pulled too taught. A minute amount of slack is just perfect.

Safety Cable Installation

  • First thread the open end of the safety cable through the horizontal hole in the metal garage door frame. This should be in close proximity to the location at which pulley’s cable affixes. The hole closest to the opening of the garage door is best as this will reduce the possibility of binding.
  • Next thread the garage door safety cable upward through the middle of the spring.
  • Now, lace the garage door safety cable through the hole which is located in the upper portion of the metal spring support that is vertical. This should be the location at which the spring is attached. Loop the safety cable back and then use a cable clamp to secure it to itself.
  • The last step is to slowly test the function of the garage door to ensure it is not going to bind or inhibit the door.

Our team of garage door specialists will be happy to visit your home and install a brand new set of safety cables for your family. Just give one of our caring reps a call now. We can assist you with any and all of your garage door needs.

Garage Door Injuries

The average garage door usually remains functional for many years as long as it receives proper maintenance. A large number of parts began to wear down after about 8 and 10 years. Many parts are integral to the safe function of your garage door and inspection combined with maintenance is essential. Visual inspection can help prevent garage door mishaps.

Garage doors are extremely dangerous and many home owners do not realize exactly how dangerous they can be. These are very heavy and under intense pressure. One slip or snap could mean bodily harm or death. At the very least it can cause damage to property and incur expensive costs to complete repairs not only to other property such as vehicles, but to repair the door as well.

Prevent the Most Common Garage Door Injuries

Below is a list of the most common injuries, their causes, and how to prevent them. It is important to set strict rules about the operation of garage doors It is also vital that those allowed to do so know exactly how to operate them safely. Garage doors are not toys and should never be played with.

  • Do not allow children or anyone else play with the garage door. This includes operation buttons and controls. This can result in horrible injuries and, in some cases, death every year. Be sure all people, animals, and objects are completely clear of the garage door when it is in operation. Control buttons should be mounted no less than 5 feet high.
  • Children often try to race the garage door to see if they can beat it while it is closing. This is an extremely dangerous act and should never be referred to as a game. The garage door is heavy and can break bones or even kill anyone trapped.
  • Fingers and hands are reported as crushed or pinched in emergency rooms more than 7,000 times every year. Ensure that all people and their appendages are clear of the door before attempting operation.
  • In the event that the garage door has suffered any type of impact a garage door specialist should be called upon. The door may have suffered unseen, but extremely dangerous damage. He/she can inspect it for damage and repair it so that it is in safe working order once again.
  • Malfunctioning garage door openers are dangerous as well. Electricity can not only cause severe burns, but it can kill you. Be sure to contact a qualified professional technician, if you have no experience repairing and working with wiring.

Be Safe: Go with a Pro

Always contact a garage door specialist for repairs and/or maintenance. These individuals are highly trained and are well aware of all of the associated precautions. Inexperienced individuals should never attempt to repair, replace, or complete maintenance on any garage door, especially to springs and safety cables. There are a number of tests that the tech will perform as well as a visual inspection during maintenance to ensure it continues to operate safely.

We at Perfect Solutions Garage Door are highly trained professional garage door techs. Our highest priority is your satisfaction and your family’s safety. Give us a call and allow us to take the worry out of your hands today. A malfunctioning garage door should be addressed immediately for the safety of the entire home.

Five Ways to Avoid Garage Door Accidents

Your garage door may seem innocent enough and safe, but there are some cases where garage doors can cause injury to some people.  The sad thing is that these injuries are the fault of the garage owners themselves and are totally avoidable. If you want your family to be safe from garage door accidents, you can minimize the risk by implementing some safety measures.

Keeping Your Garage Doors Safe

Just like any device, garage doors should be used with caution to prevent damages and accidents. Here are some ways to keep you and your family safe from garage door accidents:

  1. Keep the remote out of children’s reach.

One of the common dangers of garage doors comes from children playing with the remote to open and close the door. Not only will this damage the door, it can also harm your children if they are underneath the door when they close it. To avoid this, hide your garage door remote in a safe area out of children’s reach. If you have a door leading from the garage into your home, keep this door locked when children are at home to prevent them from going inside this area.

  1. Always open and close all the way.

When opening the door to get inside your garage, always make sure that it is opened all the way. If it is only partially open, it will put too much tension on the spring, which can snap and send the door crushing down. If a person happens to be under the impact site, he can get seriously injured.

  1. Check the reversing mechanism monthly.

The reversing mechanism ensures that if the garage door is closing and it notices that something is underneath the door, it will go back up to avoid accidents. However, some conditions prevent it from doing so, like for example if the sensor is covered in dust. To test if the mechanism works, place a tissue roller on the bottom of the door and close it. If it reverses, then it is good. If it does not reverse, contact a garage door technician right away.

  1. Learn how to use the emergency release feature.

The emergency release feature ensures that you can manually open the garage door in case of power outages.  If the garage door accidentally closes on someone and their feet are trapped, you can use this to open the door in a hurry.

  1. Always check the garage door.

Visual investigation at least once a week can help keep your garage door safe. You should check the spring for any signs of wear and tear. Also, listen to the sound your garage door makes. A squeaky sound may mean you need to lubricate the parts.

Monthly Maintenance is Necessary

A garage door in good condition is a safe door.  This is why it is important to invest in monthly garage door maintenance with a reliable garage door company.  Having professional technicians check the condition of your garage door may be the best safety strategy of all.  The tech will be able to check and determine if your garage door needs repair before any accidents can happen.

Nobody has to get injured because of garage doors. As a garage owner, you should never neglect your garage door and follow the tips above to make it safe.

How to Safeguard Your Garage Door

Safeguard direction. Yellow traffic sign with cloudy sky in the background. The garage door is one of the most indispensable parts of the family home and yet it’s also the most ignored when it comes to security. Due to technology, garage doors of today are more digital than ever and are so automated that it’s easy to think that it will always work.

However, it’s important for homeowners to know the basic ways they can ensure that their garage doors are working properly to avoid accidents and are doing its job in keeping it safe from intruders. Here’s a great list to take note of:

1.     Talk to the kids

The most common garage door related accidents always involve small children. Due to their naturally wandering ways, they are fascinated with the knobs and buttons of garage doors. This is why it is important for parents to really inform their children that garage doors are not play things and like knives or the kitchen, these are not part of their play area.

They can accidentally open the door and leave the home open to outsiders or worse, place themselves on the closing door and be pinned down. To avoid accidents, it is important to discipline small children and inform them of the dangers of playing with the garage door.

2.     Always test the door

At least once every month, place an object under the automatic garage door as it is closing. The sensors must be able to sense the object, stop closing, and automatically retract. This ensures that the automation capabilities of the door are working very well to prevent car destruction or anything dangerous to happen.

Changing of passwords is also recommended especially after routine maintenance checks.

3.     Do not leave the garage door remote control inside the car

Thanks to technology, drivers can basically close their garage doors from the comfort of their own cars while they focus on being on the road. However, leaving the remote control is a rookie mistake that car owners cannot afford to make. In instances of carjacking, it would be much easier for the bad guys to get a hold of the owners’ home and have access to it through the remote.

Instead, make use of one’s phone in connecting to the garage door. It’s much safer and harder to track should the car be compromised.

4.     Padlock the garage door when in vacation

It is easy to rely on technology when out for vacation for weeks at a time. But with technology also comes the hackers who can easily unlock a door. Instead, choose the old school way of locking from the inside and installing CCTV cameras and sensors to alert the owner should any intruder decide to make a move and target a house. Coordinating with the local police is also a good practice as they can help in patrolling around the area. They can also be one of the recipients of the alerts to respond to the house should the owners be on vacation.

In the end, due diligence always pays off for homeowners when it comes to their garage door.

Child Proofing your Garage Door

garage_door_safetyChildren play with doors all day but if there is one door you want them away from, it’s the garage door. This door can cause horrific injuries or even death if it is not child proofed. Although there is no perfect method to keep things from hurting the little ones, we have compiled a few things, which when adhered to, can reduce the chances of a garage door accident involving kids.

Ensure that the reverse mechanism works properly

The reverse mechanism is a technology that opens the door when it comes in contact with anything solid before it locks into place. The mechanism is a must-have for all garage doors according to the law. Now, if the photoelectric sensor that controls the reversing is not working, a garage door can come down on your child with tragic consequences. To avoid this, regularly check whether the door is reversing if it comes in contact with a small wood plank, for example.

Some people remember to check the reverse movement and forget to adjust the force at which the door reverses. Ideally, the slightest opposition before full closure should trigger the reverse mechanism. This way, if the door ever came in contact with a toddler, it would not press down rather it would reverse. Check to ensure that you door reverses when it encounters a relatively low resistance.

Place the door controls out of reach of kids

Placing the door controls high prevents kids from reaching the switch and playing with the door. When kids are closing and opening the door for fun, they are likely to cause damage to the motors, which run the door. As a result, the door may jam and come down on them since there is no motor to control the reversing.

Regularly inspect the electrical wiring to the door

The electrical cables to the garage door switch should always be inspected because any exposure can lead to untold damage. The equipment kept in the garage may accidentally expose the wiring and a child may touch a live wire. To prevent this, it is recommended that you regularly check for any exposed cables, especially near the switch.

In the event of a storm, keep the garage door locked at all times

If you live in an area that gets hit by storms regularly, the best thing to do after a storm is keep the garage completely out of bounds for kids. This is because storms cause a lot of damage and the door may have taken a beating, making it unstable and therefore unsafe for children. The garage should only be used after it has been inspected and everything found to be in good working condition.

Additionally, if your children store their playthings in the garage, make sure that they understand that the garage door is not to be played with. In some families, kids are only allowed to access the garage through a door from inside the house and never by the main garage door. These and other small precautions can be the difference between a healthy kid and a funeral home.
